Tetsuya Umeda gets ideas for his works from the environment and the circumstances surrounding the exhibition space. Even spaces that at first glance seem to be nothing special, can turn out to have countless characteristics found in the space above the ceiling, or in a space behind the wall, in the position of lightning systems and their structures, the wall-material, the construction of the building, etc. It is from such dialogue with a specific space that Umeda creates his work. He often works in spaces not normally used for exhibitions and makes use of found objects like daily tools and waste scraps in elaborate systems of cause-and-effect relationships. Powered by gravity, wind, centrifugal force or falling objects, Umeda’s work keeps the situation unstable and unpredictable.

Umeda has been making a series of interactive installation and performance works with the use of familiar objects such as daily commodities and waste and also natural phenomena. In addition to showing art works in exhibitions at museums both domestically and internationally, he also produces site-specific works in urban space and nature. His works have been shown in music festivals including INSTAL (Glasgaw), Unlimited (Wels) and Sonic Protest (Paris) and performing arts festival/projects such as Festival Bo:m (Seoul), Theater Spektakel (Zurich) and Noorderzon (Groningen) as well. Umeda's works are not only solo performance by the artist but also he produces a lot of collaborative works with non-professional performers. Specifically in his solo show Mon (Gate) in 2008 and collaborative work with Breaker Project from 2011, he developed the practice of turning the whole surroundings such as building structure and visitors' behavior into his art work. His recent group exhibitions includes Double Vision: Contemporary Art From Japan, Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Moscow and Haifa Museum of Art, Israel (2012); Son et Lumière, et sagesse profonde, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa (2012-2013) and Simple Interactions. Sound Art from Japan, Roskilde Museum (2011). His recent solo exhibitions include SCIENCE DE LA SUPERSTITION, Les Instants Chavirés,Montreuil (2015); 0 sai (age 0), Breaker Project, Osaka (2014) and Hotel New Osorezan, Ota Fine Arts, Singapore (2013).

Tetsuya Umeda’s work focuses on the creation of dynamic environments, through the combination of architectural structures, sound and light, and considers their impacts on human behavior. Umeda’s works, which are commonly site specific and temporal, utilise found domestic objects as a basis for his installations. These richly dynamic and embodied environments, that are often situated outside of the gallery context, encourage audience member to explore the interaction of the constituent parts of the installation and through doing so recognise their relation and individuated sensing within the work.

UMEDA Tetsuya works in various fields such as performing art, improvisational music and exhibition. He has actively collaborated with a number of visual artists and musicians. He focuses on time-process with simple physical phenomena of light and sound and expands them into live installation as site-specific. As recent activities, his solo exhibitions include 大きなことを小さくみせる[show big things as if they were small] (Kobe Art Village Center, 2011), and 小さなものが大きくみえる[small things that seems big] (Shin-Fukujyusou, Osaka, 2011). He has taken part in international exhibitions such as Double Vision:Contemporary Art from Japan (Moscow Museum of Modern Art / Haifa Museum of Art, 2011), x_sound : John Cage, Nam June Paik and after(Nam June Paik Art Center, 2012), and Aichi Triennale 2010 - Arts and Cities (Futaba building, 2010). He is based in Osaka.
